Enough baseball...

Nerd slam!

Brian Wilson on Jim Rome

This guy is one of the reasons I am rooting for the Giants this World Series.  Even if you don't like baseball at all this is entertaining.

Brother Ali

I kind of forgot how good Brother Ali is...glad I saw him last night. Also glad I saw Fresh Espresso, Macklemore, and Blue Scholars.  Great, great show last night at the Paramount.

For fun here are some more videos from the artists of last night...nothing new just good ones.

This isn't a Macklemore song but he is the main character. Ryan Lewis does some interesting stuff...

Looking good M's!

A lot of quick music reviews...

I hadn't gotten any music in a while but in the last few weeks I have been all about it.  Here are a number of quick reviews.  As school has recently started I will use a boring scale of A-F.

Wale - More About Nothing: A great followup to A Mixtape About Nothing.  Wale has amazing talent and can rhyme to lots of different styles of beats.  He also does a good job of using so many words and themes that I completely disagree with but then switching and making some "social conscious" music (see NaS).  Grade: A-.

State of the Artist - Seattlecalifragilisticextrahelladopeness: This is a legitimate new Seattle hip-hop group. (really long album title) is a great eclectic mix of different styles.  Good use of guest MCs, and I like the PSmoov beats.  Check out this awesome video "ExtraHellaDope" Grade: A

Das Racist - Shut Up,Dude - I will be honest, not that big of a fan of these guys.  Yes their lyrics are witty and clever but I generally prefer beats and the beats they use are not good...at all.  I even don't like the songs that have beat by Sabzi (producer for Blue Scholars).  I give credit to their lyrics however.  Grade: C-

Lace Cadence - Launchpad: This dude is a poor man's Drake.  I downloaded it because he is from Seattle and I thought I would give it a chance.  I have a serious thing against mixtapes that constantly have shout outs to their twitter account, facebook account, etc... Glad this was a free download. Grade: F

David Gray - Foundling: What? A singer-song writer album? Not hip-hop? I am a David Gray fan and this album is only for people that already like his work.  If you don't like David Gray, don't bother.  This album is nothing exciting as it is all stripped down and very basic but it is consistent.  I appreciate his song writing even if he does over-write it at times.  Grade: B+

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty: Back to hip-hop.  I think Big Boi is one of the most creative lyricists.  His beats tend to sound the same but I dig the sound so I am cool with it.  This is a good album from beginning to end.  "Follow Us"  "Shutter Bug" (Nice Crown Royal shout out) Grade: A-

Drake - Thank Me Later: Speaking of songs sounding the same, Drake has perfected it.  He has found his niche and made millions doing it.  So if you like his sound (and I do for a little bit at a time) this is all great stuff.  After about three songs though it becomes really repetitive.  Grade: C

Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns: Linkin Park's last album was a pretty solid album.  They decided to go away from screamo/rap-rock and try making real music.  They were greatly rewarded for it with high reviews and lots of sales.  I was hoping this album would be in the same direction but unfortunately they have gone back to the screamo/rap-rock.  Absolutely terrible.  Grade: F

John Legend & The Roots - Wake Up: This is a great combination of super talented band and singer. This album is an excellent collection of reworked classics.  Fantastic work.  Put it in and rock out.  "Our Generation" Grade: A

Zac Brown Band - You Get What You Give: This whole band knows how to play, and they know how to play lots of different styles.  This is an entertaining album that does a good job of showing off everyone's musicality.  Grade: B

Warren Zevon -Wind: Warren wrote this album in 2003 while he was dying of mesothelioma.  You can tell this album was written by a dying man and it is beautiful (the album was released two weeks before he died).  Great originals and a very good cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door.  This has been out for a while but I just got it last week so I'm quite a bit late to it.  Keep Me In Your Heart is an amazing song.  Grade: A

A really quick roundup of a few more albums:

Method Man, Ghostface, and Raekwon - Wu-Massacre: Good Wu-Tang stuff.  Grade: B+

Pete Murray - Summer at Eureka: Pete Murray stays consistent with his laid back style.  Grade: B

Das Racist - Sit Down, Man: Again, I'm not really into these guys.  Grade: C-

Pete Yorn - Pete Yorn: Consistent album but nothing stands out positive or negative. Grade: C

Lots of posts I know

but this is awesome

Mariners Letter

This email was written by the Mariner's GM and sent out to fans...if you don't like the Mariners or baseball in general then this will be pretty boring.

Jack's Report to the Fans

Some of you may remember an old-time player named Rocky Bridges, a colorful middle infielder who went on to manage in the minor leagues for many years. Rocky once said, "Well, there are three things that the average person thinks he can do better than anybody else. Build a fire, run a hotel and run a baseball team."
After the 2010 season, I'm sure a lot of you are ready to step up and tell me how to run our ballclub. And I'm always willing to listen.
But despite our poor performance at the Major League level in 2010, there are plenty of reasons to believe that our long-term plan is working. In fact, looking at the big picture, our organization actually took a step forward last year.
Before you click away from this e-mail, give me a chance to explain.
Let's start with the cornerstone strategy established when I came to Seattle in October, 2008: We will build a winning franchise through talent that we draft, acquire and develop in our farm system. This is the key to long-term, sustained success in baseball.
The good news is, you gotta like what you see down on the farm.
-Eight of our nine minor league teams made it to post-season play in 2010.
-The AAA Rainiers, Class A Lumber Kings and Northwest League AquaSox all played in their leagues' championship series.
Two won league titles.
-As a group, Mariners minor league hitters ranked #1 in home runs, runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
-The cumulative won-loss record of our minor league teams was 489-410, a .544 winning percentage. Only one organization
did better - the Cardinals at .549.
Does this mean that we should start printing 2011 World Series tickets? Unfortunately, no, not yet. But it does mean that we've got talent at every level of the organization - talent that's developing, scoring runs and learning how to win.
Let's talk about some of these kids.
We've got a flock of top-rated prospects on their way to the big club. These include position players Dustin Ackley, Justin Smoak, Carlos Peguero, Nick Franklin, Kyle Seager, Johermyn Chavez, Greg Halman and Matt Mangini, along with hard-throwing pitchers likeMichael Pineda, Blake Beavan, Dan Cortes, Mauricio Robles, Maikel Cleto and Anthony Varvaro. Many of our best prospects are headed for winter ball and the fall instructional league - they're driven to improve and play at the next level.
Some of these youngsters will develop faster than others, but we've got a rich pipeline of talent. Impressive, considering how thin our minor league system was just a couple of years ago. Plus there are more top prospects coming: We have the #2 pick in the 2011 June draft and we continue to scout and sign top international players.
At the big league level, Mariners pitchers tied for the third best ERA in the American League in 2010. Felix Hernandez has fulfilled his potential as a perennial Cy Young candidate. Jason Vargas, Doug Fister and Luke French made major strides in 2010. We like our pitching; our staff is young, developing and hungry.
Two young players, catcher Adam Moore and outfielder Michael Saunders, got valuable playing time and impressed scouts around the league. Meanwhile, our four core players - Ichiro, Felix, Guti and Chone Figgins - are signed to long-term deals.
I'm a baseball man. I'm not trying to sell you on the idea that we're at the top of the baseball world. We still have work to do, lots of it. My first job is to hire our field manager - and I'm already hard at work identifying and reviewing candidates. Obviously, we need to score more runs by adding to the middle of our lineup. And, for much of the past season, our team didn't play the fundamentally sound baseball that I want to see. I'm addressing all our team's needs and I'll keep you posted throughout the winter.
But there's one thing you need to know about the Seattle Mariners organization:
Everybody wants to win - from Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong to the clubhouse attendant in Everett. We have a plan in place and we're working days, nights and weekends to make it successful.
But as a fan, you want results, not promises. We know that. So we're doing everything we can to make it happen sooner rather than later.
I love the people of this city and this region. I love the energy you bring to the ballpark and the loyalty you've shown to the organization. We owe you a winner. It's coming. Stick with us, there's a bright light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jack Zduriencik
