In case the rapture does come this Saturday...

So you've assembled a team of filthy sinners to care for my pet after my saintly ass has ascended into the heavens? No thank you, you Godless heathens. I'm leaving my dog with a cyanide pill and .357 with one in the chamber...just to protect her from your minions!

TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light

I was a little late to coming around to TV on the Radio.  I had their album "Return to Cookie Mountain" (which is their third LP) but I never really listened to it or liked it.  For some reason when their 2008 album "Dear Science" came out I gave it a listen and have been a fan ever since.  I still don't like the album "Return to Cookie Mountain" but I do like everything since.  TV on the Radio's newest LP, "Nine Types of Light", has a very similar sound to their last LP and I am ok with that.  I haven't gotten tired of their current style.  TV on the Radio has a sound that is unique with the blending of different styles.  The way they combine the rock, funk, hip-hop beats, and even a bit of punk at times is a sound that is all theirs.  They are in a league of their own which is either loved or hated.  I have been listening to this album quite a bit for the last few weeks.  Some of my favorite songs...

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Here We Rest

Jason Isbell is a brilliant song writer and I was very sad when I heard he was leaving the Drive By Truckers.  Now that he has come out with a couple of albums I can say that I think it is alright that he left DBT.  I don't know if you could say that his music has matured but it has taken a different path than DBT. For the most part he is now playing the acoustic guitar as opposed to the screaming electric that DBT often does.  His songs are less about specific stories of the south but they still have that background and resonance.  Another difference between Jason Isbell and the last couple of DBT albums is that it sounds like Jason put more time into his music and tried different takes.  The last few DBT albums have been recorded in a week or two with mostly first takes, and that can be heard at times.  I appreciate the effort that Jason has put in this album.  With this album he has put aside some of his extraordinary guitar skills and has instead focused on his song writing and the overall presentation of the music.  Some of my favorite songs from this album...

Foo Fighters - Wasting Light

I don't really listen to any harder rock but I have always liked the Foo Fighters.  I think Dave Grohl is an amazingly talented musician who has consistently been making good music for years.  With the album Wasting Light the Foo Fighters kind of went back to some of their older sounds and just made an all out rock album.  Wasting Light was all recorded with analog equipment as they went for more of a garage band sound.  I appreciate this going back to the beginning and think that they totally nailed it.  Another way they went back to the beginning?  Pat Smear who was with the band until 1997 is an official member again (he is the weird looking dude wearing gloves in the video).  Not to say that the Foo Fighters ever lost it but it's nice to see them go back to their beginning.

Atmosphere - The Family Sign

For a while I have been meaning to write some music reviews.  I have a bunch of albums to write about but I haven't gotten around to critiquing.  This is a project I will come back to every once and a while.

I really like Atmosphere because musically it is more than just a drum machine and a hook.  They really make music that is more than hip hop to back up Slug's vocals.  It is nice to see that the creativity is not just in the writing.  Speaking of writing...Slug does an amazing job of using each song as an opportunity to tell a story.  He takes on the persona of different characters to tell each story.  The Family Sign is a great blending of these two qualities of Atmosphere, the music and the storytelling.  My only complaint with the album is that some of the songs could be longer.  That isn't much of a criticism but I definitely don't want some of the songs to end when they do.

An example of a song that I wish was longer...

An example of the story telling...

Something to read

One of my co-posters asked when I was going to post something for him to read. Well, not now. But here is 15 minutes of A-League Aussie footballers making fools of themselves for your enjoyment.

Belated Cinco de Mayo!

I was going to buy you a chicken... laced with poison. But then I thought better of it.

I love this kid

The energy! The haircut! He is like a mini version of the bully kid in any 80s high school movies.

Awesome Bunny

Belated Happy Easter.

Swords! Castles! Giamatti! Angry Rock Music! Violence!

For some reason I like these dumb movies.

Is it true that there are 'less than 20 men' defending the castle. That doesn't sound so realistic that they could hold against an army unless they are the same men who fought in 300. Is this based from any truth? I hope the film is better than what the trailer shows.

@fdracup most people think of the word 'castle' the same way they think of the word 'palace', but in fact castles were only ever a means of defending as much as possible, for as long as possible, with as few men as possible. Think about which side of a 5 metre-thick, dozens of feet high stone wall you'd want to be on in a battle?

@fdracup most people in thouse days where not actually soldiers, just like the dude in 300 said in that part where they ask the profession of each "soldier"...
Also, they didn't added it into the movie, but there are old documents recently found that suggest the possibility of them having machineguns and other explossive artifacts given to them by aliens from another world which may be related to 9/11...
