Have Your Burger Many Ways: Burger Wars Heat Up

If you're hankering for a hamburger for lunch, what to order may be the easy part of your decision. The tougher choice: Where to go? That's right, it's your burger war roundup.
    First up, Whopper Bar
Yup, you read that right. The BK has opened a specialty restaurant called the Whopper Bar, which serves up variations on the Whopper sandwich. The flagship opened at New York's Times Square, where BK groupies flocked to try novelty items like the Meat Beast — which includes crispy bacon, pepperoni, and melted American cheese — and the Bourbon Whopper — which comes with onion rings and Bourbon-flavored sauce. But the star attraction must be the NY Burger Pizza, which features: Four patties, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, and something called Tuscan sauce, served up on a giant sesame seed bun. Needless to say (and we do feel we must say) this meal is meant to be shared. Burger buzz on the Web has led to hungry searches on "burger king pizza burger," with one-day Web lookups up 300%.
Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger — for Real
Warning: Your cholesterol level may rise just from reading this. The fast foodies'  ultimate combo was reportedly dreamed up by a chef in Decatur, Georgia, who brought together the two food faves (a donut sliced in half, with meat and cheese in the middle) and dubbed it the Luther Burger. The calorie bomb has been making its way to ball parks and state fairs, growing a fan base along the way. This year, the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger is featured at the Wisconsin and Kentucky State Fairs. As one writer for the Christian Science Monitor noted, the burger "sounds atrocious to just about everyone who hasn't tried one." Searches on Yahoo! for the sweet-and-savory treat are sizzling with a whopping 447,225% one-day increase in lookups.
    New Guys: Five Guys
Five Guys Burgers and Fries may not offer burgers on donuts or pizza on burgers. But what they do have: really tasty hamburgers, according to their growing admirers. The Five Guys chain recently caught headlines with the news that they had edged out the chain with the cult following,In-N-Out Burger, in Zagat's pick for top burger. Their secret, according to critics: Made-to-order sandwiches with fresh ingredients and unlimited types of toppings — for no extra charge. Oh, and having President Obama as a fan probably doesn't hurt, either. With only 600 outlets around the country, the upstart won't be upending McDonald's anytime soon. But even In-N-Out, with its hard-to-reach locations, special insider ordering lingo, and die-hard groupies, had better watch out for Five Guys. Burger guys and gals are keeping watch on the Web: Searches for "five guys burgers fries," increased 1,175% in one day.
